Kleen-Tech Capabilities

Kleen-Tech performs a variety of specialized services including work in radiological controlled areas to include the escort of personnel, decontamination of equipment, instrument operability checks, changing of Fixed Air Head Sampling (FAHS) filters, as well as instrument removal and survey. Kleen-Tech also launders personal protective equipment used in Beryllium Operations. These specialized services are performed at our operations at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Kleen-Tech employees perform work in radiological controlled areas to include the escort of personnel, decontamination of equipment, performance of instrument operability checks, changing of FAHS filters, as well as instrument removal and survey. Prior to performing these specialized services, Kleen-Tech employees complete extensive radiological training (RAD1 and RAD2) and are active participants in the Bio-Assay Program before beginning their work in radiological areas.

Additionally, our employees complete site-specific training, including reading and comprehension of site procedures. These employees are fitted for air-purified respirators, supplied-air or self-contained breathing apparatus prior to beginning their specialized services work. Employees follow all plant procedures, which include having a Radiological Control Technician check each area before performing assigned work. Employees follow all written, posted and verbal instructions and contact the Radiological Control Technician before removing equipment or materials. Kleen-Tech employees performing specialized services are required to wear appropriate PPE when performing tasks and practice exposure control “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) at all times.

As part of our specialized services work, a crew of Kleen-Tech employees launders Personal Protective Equipment used in Beryllium Operations. These employees are beryllium trained and participate in the Medical Monitoring Program before entering any beryllium areas. Employees receive site-specific training for the facility and pass several written exams prior to working in the facility. Classroom training is followed by on the job training to learn how to safely launder beryllium PPE. This process includes collecting special laundry bags that disintegrate when contacted with water. Special care is taken not to agitate or compress laundry items. This crew washes, dries, folds and stores the PPE. These employees wear nitrile gloves and other appropriate PPE when accomplishing these tasks. These employees are classified as Hazardous Waste Removal Workers.
